Student Announcements

Introducing Sea Change Theatre by Jill Oliver

by a Black Boxer

I am so excited to announce that I have started my own theater company and I’m producing my first show. Sea Change Theatre is a new company formed as a platform to demonstrate our collective training through Black Box Acting. Our ensemble is comprised of myself, Amber Hargroder and Maria Margaglione – all students of Black Box. As members of this particular community, we believe that actors should live fully in the moment to demonstrate complete honesty, vulnerability, integrity and fearlessness. Our belief in this process compelled us to continue behaving fearlessly by starting our own theatre company – Sea Change.
Our first production will be Desdemona: A Play About a Handkerchief by Paula Vogel. Black Box Instructor and School at Steppenwolf graduate Ian McLaren will direct. We chose this play as our first production out of love for the three complex and strong female characters who make up this modern approach to the story of Othello. It is a fast-paced exploration of a web of secrets, desires and men, and it asks each of us: what would you do to survive and feel alive?
We have launched a fundraiser to help aid our efforts. Please check out our indiegogo page. There you can learn more about our production and view one of our rehearsal workshops. The smallest contribution is very helpful and extremely appreciated.
We will be presenting our work at The Prop Theatre at 7:30 pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and at 3pm on Sundays from March 8-24, 2013, with the exception of a 5pm show held on Saturday, March 16, 2013. We hope to see you at the show!
Thank you for all your support!
Jill Oliver

The Factory Theater’s 20th Anniversary Gala. Invite from Jill Oliver.

by Black Box Acting

Dear Friends and (Black Box) Family,

In 2009, straight out of college, I went to an audition for Hey Dancin! at the Factory Theater. Being that the audition requirements were to dance 80′s style and read some sides I was obviously cast. Since then the Factory Theater has taken me under their wing, cast me in more shows and invited me to be an ensemble member. I’ve had the opportunity to act, dance, develop grant-writing skills and now I’m even working on a play of my own. We are a company that only produces original work. The Factory Theater is fun-loving and hard working people. They are an inspiration and artistic porthole for me. They are my second family.

I share this with you because on Monday December 10th, we are celebrating Factory’s 20th anniversary with a Gala celebration. I would be so grateful if you could come and celebrate this outstanding organization with me. Tickets are $30 and include drinks, passed apps, several performances, a reading of a crazy staged play and a silent auction for many wonderful prizes.

Tickets can be purchased here.

If you can’t make it but would still like to show your support, a tax-deductible donation can be made here.

I cannot thank you enough for your support over the last few years. How about you join me for a party so I can tell you in person?

Hope to see you soon!
