Five Questions with Laura Hooper

by Black Box Acting

Tate Geborkoff- What made you want to start the ACADEMY?
Laura Hooper- Audrey and I wanted to create a conservatory training program that we would fight tooth and nail to be a part of. The Responsibility we have as Artists to work with integrity, honesty and professionalism is immense. To be immersed in the Black Box curriculum with other hard-working and ambitious artists for nine months, is something all artists should have the opportunity to experience. Training at The ACADEMY is not for the faint of heart; every single class, ACADEMY students work their asses off, are pushed to their personal best and are expected to be resilient and stronger in the next class. The result of working this way not only revolutionizes individual processes, but our entire acting community. I very deeply believe that the way Black Box actor’s train and work in the industry will set a new standard for acting.

TG- What made you want to join the ACADEMY ensemble for three weeks?
LH- At the end of last year, I made a painful discovery that I was lost, unhappy and living in fear. After some painful soul searching I realized that it was my own lack of passion and artistic pursuits, which I had put aside for several years in order to build Black Box and start a family, was slowly poisoning me. Looking back, I had thought that acting was something I didn’t have time to pursue. When I realized that the lack of it was negatively affecting all other aspects of my life, I decided to make a change. So I jumped headfirst into The ACADEMY and joined that bad ass ensemble. While I was only part of the ensemble for 3 weeks, I can honestly say that I am a new person for it. My renewed spirit and outlook on life has positively impacted all other areas in my life. I feel reborn.

TG- What is it like being a student in the ACADEMY?
LH- During my daily drive up to The ACADEMY, I felt like I was on the way to the best party of the year. I never knew what was going to happen, but I knew it would be huge. I would be surrounded by kick ass people that inspire and challenge me. I knew that in every class, I would have the opportunity to work and let it all go. And in those moments, I would be free. And afterwards, I would learn something new about the “new” me. It was a life-changing three weeks.

TG- What part of The ACADEMY excited you most?
LH- The instructor-led discussions at the top of class. Audrey’s ability to relate real-world topics to our “purpose” for the day felt like blows to my stomach. These discussions left me reeling and ready to smear blue paint all over my face, and rush into the fray.

TG- What part of The ACADEMY terrified you most?
LH- The day I made the discovery that I am a self-saboteur. “Failure is not an option” was a groundbreaking theme for me to work with. I couldn’t believe it when I realized I had been self-sabotaging. This issue feels closely linked to the “grossness” that was 2012.

TG- Favorite moment as a student in the ACADEMY?
LH- Playing Mae in Fool for Love. ACADEMY training + fucked up circumstances + my acting partner = an emotional Tsunami.

Four Questions with ACADEMY Instructor Jessie Fisher

by Black Box Acting

ACADEMY Instructor Jessie Fisher gives us her insight on what it’s like to be an ACADEMY ensemble member.

Tate Geborkoff- What is it like teaching at the ACADEMY?
Jessie Fisher- Teaching at The ACADEMY is exciting and challenging. It’s an honor to be in the room with the same students for such an extended amount of time and share their journey. It’s great to be able to chart a students progress for many months and be able to target where they are now, where they came from and where they are heading.

TG- How is teaching at The ACADEMY different from teaching at The STUDIO?
JF- The ACADEMY curriculum is great because it takes STUDIO classes, but really fleshes them out because we have the luxury of time. There is more time to explore, in depth, each level of training to build your own process. This ensemble, for nine months, gets to grow and change together. Unless you go to grad school, this is a very unique opportunity. You can learn so much from working with an ensemble that you trust three days a week.

TG- What is your favorite bit of ACADEMY knowledge you want to pass on?
JF- Building your process as an artist is not easy. It comes with responsibility. The ACADEMY gives you an intense and energizing opportunity to try and fail and get back up and succeed over and over in a safe place so that when you walk out of the room at the end of nine months, you will feel like you are ready to throw yourself into anything and everything.

TG- Favorite moment of the ACADEMY so far?
JF- Watching students surprise themselves with honesty. This has made me laugh and cry so many times in the classroom. It has reminded me that being part of an ensemble is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself as an artist.
